Less than 13% students reach completion of MOOCs.
2012, was declared the year of the MOOC. Over years, they have been branded as the champions equitable education, with over 112 million enrollment on the largest platform.
Yet, on ground reality is vastly different with almost 9/10th of the people enrolled on the platform unable to see a course through.
Problem
To evaluate reasons for dropout and to propose ideas that could potentially mitigate dropout rates, contributing valuable perspectives to the ongoing discourse on enhancing the efficacy of MOOCs.

What are MOOCs?
Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) or an Open Online Course is a web-based educational program designed for widespread participation and accessibility with course components like recorded lectures, readings, and assignments and often incorporate interactive elements, including user forums and social media discussions.

Thus, understanding why students are dropping out is paramount in order to help students participating in these courses to persist longer and learn more.
But How?
And, what can be done to reduce those number?

Research
First I carried out secondary research. Based on information gleaned, I created a survey which was distributed via social media. Based on the response received from the survey, semi-structured interviews was conducted with 5 individuals.

Analyzing the data from secondary and primary research led finding some key-insights that could potentially be used to build solutions.

A mobile application to reduce drop out rates for MOOCs by helping students find study partners/mentors tailored to the MOOC they are undertaking.
